Compassion in Action: Tackling Homelessness in the Tenderloin (Hana Y, ‘27)

"There’s not much to tell,” Hana says, looking away modestly. Yet, after half an hour of conversation, it’s clear that her story is anything but ordinary.
Hana, a sophomore at Prestans, balances her studies with impactful volunteer work at the San Francisco Community Health Center (SFCHC). In the heart of the Tenderloin, a neighborhood facing significant social and economic challenges, Hana helps distribute wellness supplies such as hygiene kits and harm reduction materials, while also collecting data that informs SFCHC’s services. It’s a hands-on introduction to the world of public health–an area she’s deeply passionate about.
Her inspiration for volunteering? “They need help,” Hana explains simply. It’s a straightforward answer that belies her deep sense of empathy and purpose. She also credits her mother, who works for the SFCHC, for inspiration and admires her as an example of selfless service and dedication to others.
When asked how her work and experiences in the Tenderloin make her feel, Hana is thoughtful. “It’s intense sometimes,” she acknowledges, and explains the reality of substance abuse being a contributing factor to homelessness in the area. But she’s quick to downplay her efforts, insisting that service is just a natural part of life for her–not something she does for recognition. Her humility is striking, but it’s clear that her work is driven by a genuine desire to make a difference.
Hana lights up while making connections between her classes and her volunteer work. In Advanced Topics Psychology, she appreciates how her teacher ties lessons to real-world applications. “I love learning about how the brain works,” she shares with a smile, explaining how this knowledge helps her understand and connect with those she meets in the Tenderloin.
Beyond her volunteer work, Hana is a creative force. She takes hip-hop, sewing, and acting classes, attends piano lessons, and dreams of writing her own songs one day and producing music. Next term, she’ll also expand her involvement with the SFCHC, stepping into a role as a research assistant on a homeless health survey project.
Hana’s story is a reminder of the impact young people can have when they combine passion, education, and action. In the midst of this holiday season–a time often associated with giving–Hana’s work inspires us to think about how we, too, can contribute to our communities. Whether through acts of service, kindness, or creativity, her quiet leadership is a testament to the power of compassion in action.
