COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The US History survey course seeks to identify and assess specific themes, patterns, behaviors and traditions that have shaped the American past. It draws extensively on foundational primary and secondary texts, as well as a vast array of other engaging resources in order to promote a deeper understanding of America. Students will build historical knowledge, develop and hone historical methods, and begin to create complex historical narratives and analysis to help them decipher America’s rich, complicated history. In doing so, it is hoped that they will glean a greater understanding of the role of America in the world, and the role of the world in America. This course begins in the age of exploration and covers colonization, the American Revolution, and the formation of the American government. It then moves through the American Civil War, both World Wars, the Great Depression, the Cold War, the American Civil Rights Movement, and the landscape of 21st century America.

  • Examine and analyze historical sources.

  • Identify and analyze historical turning points.

  • Understand causation, change, and continuity over

    time.

  • Apply historical knowledge and historical thinking to

    contemporary issues.

  • Read critically and speak publicly

  • Craft written and verbal arguments

  • Analyze the historical context and ideals that lead to

    the creation of the U.S. Constitution.

  • Examine and Analyze key founding documents:

    “Declaration of Independence”, “Constitution”, and

    “Federalist Papers”.

  • Explore how American political institutions have

    evolved over time.
