Latin 4

Latin 4 Online High School Course

COURSE LENGTH:

Full Year (30 Sessions)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Latin IV is a year-long regular level course designed to transition students to reading classical Latin in an unadapted form. We will read the best known Roman authors with a focus on learning about their culture in their own words, while reviewing advanced grammar topics. The course functions as a final high school level course, or as preparation for AT Latin or college level courses. Students are assessed on reading competency, translation skills and grammar analysis, as well as cultural connections via short essays. The course is designed for students who have already studied Latin for at least two to three years, and who have covered all major grammatical and cultural topics.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • This is a course in Latin literature, introducing students to six authors of the classical period: Caesar, Catullus, Cicero, Vergil, Horace, and Ovid. These six authors represent the pinnacle of Roman literature, and are the most frequently taught authors in college courses.

  • Three Enduring Understandings:

    • Communication: students learn how to read unadapted Latin passages of Latin authors with ease and deep understanding.

    • Culture: students will understand, through their literature, the practices, perspectives, and products of the Roman world.

    • Connections: students will deepen their understanding of the influence of the Latin language and Roman culture on the English language in particular, and western culture in general.

  • Reading Latin literature will allow students to understand the thoughts of the ancient authors—thoughts that have shaped the culture of our world—while allowing the student to see the subtleties and nuances of language and word order that often cannot be captured in a translation.
