COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Advanced Topics Psychology is an advanced honors-level course designed to meet the scope and sequence requirements of a college-level introduction to psychology course.


COURSE LENGTH:

  • 30 hours of synchronous work

  • 45 hours of asynchronous work

Course Goals:

  • Be able to define and explain the content of all major areas of psychology

  • Be able to apply skills of concept, data analysis, scientific investigation

  • Explain behavior and apply theories using concepts from different theoretical frameworks

  • Analyze, interpret and evaluate psychological research studies

Seven Integrated Themes: APA Standards:

  • Psychological science relies on empirical evidence and adapts as new data develop

  • Psychology explains general principles that govern behavior while recognizing individual differences

  • Psychological, biological, social, and cultural factors influence behavior and mental process

  • Psychology values diversity, promotes equity, and fosters inclusion in pursuit of a more just society

  • Our perceptions and biases filter our experiences of the world through an imperfect personal lens

  • Applying psychological principles can change our lives, organizations, and communities in positive ways

  • Ethical principles guide psychology research and practice

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Be able to identify the basic concepts and research findings associated with each theoretical perspective of psychology

  • Gain an understanding of each of the major areas of psychology including

    • Biological Bases of Behavior

    • Sensation and Perception

    • Learning

    • Cognitive Psychology

    • Lifespan Development

    • Motivation, Emotion, and Personality

    • Clinical Psychology

    • Social Psychology

  • Apply psychological principles to an understanding of human behavior

  • To gain an understanding of the theoretical perspectives and the major areas of psychology including

  • Use empirical evidence to come to suitable and objective conclusions about mental processes and behavior

  • Be able to explain different models of behavior based on science as opposed to intuition

  • Learn to design, conduct, and evaluate psychological research

  • Understand and describe the ethical principles that guide psychologist in research and therapy today

  • Identify, read, and critically assess credible scientific sources

  • Use evidence-based reasoning to support arguments

  • Be able to apply complex behavioral concepts to real-world scenarios
