COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This 7th Grade English course is designed to develop student critical and analytic skill sets, with a core focus on reading and writing. Students will delve into a variety of literary genres while exploring the central theme of self and society. Specifically, students will investigate how one’s sense of self is formed and shaped through interactions with others, and how this central theme is revealed in stories and in storytelling. Students will begin to grapple with literary criticism in small chunks, with the opportunity to incorporate their ideas into longer process papers. The goal is for students to become sophisticated writers and readers who make inferences, draw connections, and appreciate texts.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course, students will be able to

  • Read and analyze a variety of texts, both for literal meaning and analytical significance.

  • Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

  • Examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

  • Craft increasingly varied and grammatically accurate sentences, including sentences that incorporate quotations.\

  • Build vocabulary and grammatical skill sets.

  • Participate meaningfully in sustained literary discussions.
