COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of creative writing. Students will be introduced to the primary genres of creative writing in order to prepare them for further study of writing including fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry at the university level. Over the course of the class students will improve their writing, speaking, and discussion skills while also mastering the art of crafting and telling a compelling story.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • The fundamental techniques and vocabulary of fiction and creative non-fiction writing.

  • Crafting effective and detailed descriptions and learning the fundamentals of storytelling.

  • Mastering focused and intentional free writing on a series of pre- selected topics/prompts.

  • Generating meaning/critical reflection on personal experience.

  • Brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising personal essays.

  • Giving meaningful critical feedback to peers.

  • Mastering the Art of Noticing.

  • The drafting and editing of a short story, creative nonfiction essay, or short poetry collection.


ESSENTIAL CONTENT:

  • Introduction to the creative writing process including elements of plot, setting characterization, dialogue, perspective, theme, and style.

  • Various forms of creative writing including personal and narrative writing, poetry, storytelling and exemplary instances of creative writing.

  • Distinctions between the personal essay as a form of creative writing in an academic setting.

  • Understanding the connection between creative writing and the college essay.

  • Understanding the connection between style, form, and structure in effective storytelling.
