COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Conceptual Physics focuses on learning the fundamental principles of the scientific study of physics. Though there is less of an emphasis on mathematics than honors physics, mathematical calculation remains integral to the course. Students will develop and hone their mastery of the scientific method while studying topics like Newton’s law, linear motion, conservation laws, momentum, energy, thermodynamics, heat, magnetism, particles, and radiation. The course provides students space to investigate, analyze, and think critically about the scientific processes behind movement in the natural world.


Course OBJECTIVES:

  • To understand laws of motion, including gravity, projectile, circular, and simple harmonic motion.

  • To learn and apply Newton’s Law and other laws of force.

  • To master the theoretical workings of energy, power, mechanics, and work.

  • To be able to define, identify, construct, and analyze electrical circuits, currents, and fundamental rules of such electrical processes.

  • To comprehend and practice sound scientific methods and methods of critical and analytical thinking.

  • To identify, and design, a strong, comprehensive experiment.

  • To evaluate scientific data and experiment results.

  • To apply computational algebraic skills in solving basic physics problems and completing computational exercises.

  • To acquire and hone skills of scientific inquiry that can be applied to future coursework in biology, chemistry, advanced physics, and other science classes.

GUIDING QUESTIONS:

  • What rules and laws can help us explain and predict natural and mechanical occurrences?

  • How and why do objects and processes act the way they do?

  • How might we use laws and theorems to predict the movement of various objects?

  • What are the most important recent developments in modern quantum physics? Why?

  • Why is the study of physics relevant to the real world?
